Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a unique dental treatment planning tool that helps enhance predictability, and improves communication between our patients and us. A treatment plan is based on a thorough analysis of the patient’s dental features and facial proportions. With the use of photographs, videos, and temporary mock-ups, DSD helps us get a better sense of the relationship between the teeth, gums and lips, gums, and teeth, and well as how they work together to create a well-balanced smile.
At Smith and Van Lierop Dentistry, we use a revolutionary app called Smile Designer Pro. Smile Designer Pro that enables dental us to design and communicate cosmetic treatment plans with other team members and you, the patient. As a result, you get a beautiful smile in far less time.
Why choose Digital Smile Design?
Customised treatment plans
Simply resolving functional issues with the gums, teeth, and jaws isn’t enough for some patients. For instance, you may want to have a beautiful smile that makes you feel attractive and confident and attractive. Your smile greatly impacts the way you feel, so if you’re always trying to hide your teeth, you may not be displaying the best side of yourself. Also, each patient is unique, and their own set of needs and wants out of dental treatment. Using a one-size-fits-all treatment plan isn’t going to provide the same results for all individual situations.
With Digital Smile Design, you’re not limited to a single course of treatment. Rather, the focus is on what you want and need. These expectations are then applied to your customised treatment plan. When your treatment is complete, you will have a beautiful and natural smile that complements your facial features and helps you feel more confident in the way you look.
Better communication
If you’ve ever experienced mixed messages or poor communication regarding your dental treatment, you may have felt frustrated with the process. One key advantage of the DSD protocol is the improved communication between everyone involved in the treatment. Before deciding to improve your smile, you have probably spent ample time researching options and determining which will be the best for you. After you have made this decision, you will feel at ease in your treatment options and aware of the next steps in the process.
Better results
Digital Smile Design makes it possible for the procedures you choose to match your goals precisely. Of course, at Smith and Van Lierop Dentistry, we will advise you on the best options. By working with our dentists and knowing exactly what to expect, many of our patients report various benefits, such as:

- A natural look that complements overall appearance
- More confidence throughout the treatment process

How does Digital Smile Design work?
In a nutshell, the Digital Smile Design works in a four-step process:
Step 1 – Digital Smile Design
Digital photography, videos and computer imaging software are used to create the perfect smile, by moving teeth into the most aesthetic and functional position for each patient.
Step 2 – Dental Wax Up
The imaging will be transformed into a 3D model that patients may pick up and examine.
Step 3 – Dental Mock-Up
A mock-up is made from the 3D model, which is then placed into the mouth of the patient. This process will confirm that the aesthetic design is in harmony with the components of the face. This step also allows us to choose the most minimally invasive techniques to achieve the patient’s desired results.
Step 4 – Final Treatment
The final step is when you receive your desired new smile with long-lasting results. Treatment options vary, but will include one or more of the following; dental implants, veneers, crowns and dental bonding.
