Improve your smile with adult orthodontics

Contrary to popular belief, orthodontics is not just for young children and teens. More and more adults are choosing to straighten their smiles with adult orthodontics treatments. So, it’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted!

Why choose adult orthodontics?

You may have an overbite, underbite, overcrowding of teeth, crooked teeth or jaw misalignment. This can increase the risk of tooth wear and fracture and wear. We may recommend orthodontic treatments to slowly change the positioning of the teeth to be more aligned and straighter. Orthodontics can give you a beautiful, natural smile that functions properly and lasts.

Do I need adult orthodontics?

Our dentists at Smith and Van Lierop can quickly identify if a patient needs orthodontic work and treat them accordingly

If you have any of the following, you may be suitable for orthodontic treatment:

  • Underbite — the lower teeth are too far forward
  • Overbite — the upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth
  • Open bite — the space between the biting surfaces of the front and/or side teeth
  • Misplaced midline— the centre of your upper teeth does not line up with the centre of the lower teeth
  • Improper spacing — there are spaces or gaps between the teeth
  • Crowding — there are too many teeth to accommodate

The benefits of orthodontics

Orthodontics is important because improperly positioned or misaligned teeth can lead to a greater risk of tooth wear, fractures, decay, and gingivitis. Also, an irregular bite can make teeth harder to reach or more painful to brush and floss. This can lead to poor oral hygiene. In addition, it causes overloading of certain teeth that may result in tooth wear, chipping, fracture, and even pain.

Orthodontics is an effective treatment for:

  • Close gaps in between teeth
  • Ensure that your jaw and teeth have proper alignment
  • Straighten crooked teeth
  • Improve oral function (for example, talking and eating)
  • Mend improper bites

Types of adult orthodontics

Metal braces

Traditional or metal braces are the most common type of braces. Metal braces consist of brackets that we place on the front or back of teeth. In addition, it uses wires that tighten to move the teeth into the correct position. These braces consist of stainless steel brackets and wires. They are a great option because they are among the most cost-effective type of braces.

Damon braces

Damon braces are self-ligating and use a sliding mechanism to connect archwires. These braces produce faster results because the teeth can move on their own without needing adjustment. Damon braces cause less friction and pressure on the teeth, so movement is less painful. The braces are easier to keep clean.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces work similar to metal braces, except they are a clear ceramic material. This means the braces are far less noticeable and blend in well with natural teeth- making it an ideal choice for self-conscious adults.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are an orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth with a series of almost invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. You’ll get new aligners every two weeks to move teeth gradually, week by week, into the correct position. Clear aligners are comfortable, clear and removable-transforming your smile without disrupting your life.

What to expect at an orthodontics consultation

Firstly, we begin with a dental examination and imaging. Completing an oral examination allows us to see any issues that might not have come up in your records. For example, you may have a cavity that needs filling and must be done before having orthodontics put in place.

Secondly, we will put together a comprehensive treatment plan. The treatment plan may include having dental issues corrected first. You’ll need to schedule an additional appointment with us to correct these issues.

The treatment also includes the method that will be used and how long it will take to achieve results. The treatment plan is an essential step because it gives you a better understanding of what to expect from the procedures you’ll be getting.

Lastly, we will place your orthodontics and see you regularly for check-ups.
